Revealing Grail Adventure, a clone of a classic & why I've determined it's safe to share
Revealing my recreation of the classic Adventure game on the Atari 2600, Grail Adventure!
... You might have noticed that this game has been uploaded to Itch for a while though. In fact the last update was over a year ago.
The reason it took a while to reveal this game was that I was concerned with the legality of posting this game publicly given it's a clone of Adventure which was released commercially in 1980. However, after looking up some information on the existing trademark and copyright of the game, I have determined this is a very legally safe recreation of the game to allow for public sharing.
The trademark expired and the copyright seems to only protect the source code itself. The copyright would not apply because I programmed the recreation based on merely observation of how the original product functioned with no knowledge of how the source code even works. The program code is completely different as a result.
If Atari wants to contact me, I wish it to be on good terms.
I will take the game down if they can prove their copyright protects against even reverse engineered works, but it is to my understanding that the copyright only protects the original code.
Okay! Just wanted to make clear concerning all of the important legal stuff.
I will likely release an update soon after Godot 4.0 release or if anyone finds any serious bugs.
Once that happens I'll make another blog post and talk more about the game itself. See you then!
